Losing a pet can be difficult …

Pets have a special place in our lives. They are patient listeners when we are upset and gentle comforters when we are sad. They may be the last link that we had to a family member who died. For those who live alone, they bring life to the household. The pets that we have as adults may also connect us back to our childhood pets, whether they were a refuge in tough times or simply our best buddies. Most of all, pets are a source of unconditional love and acceptance. When pets die (or disappear), that place in our lives is empty.

Our routine is changed …

Our pets are part of the fabric our lives … walking a dog, feeding a rabbit, waking to the gentle purr of a cat. Each time you return home and are not greeted by that familiar friend, it’s a reminder of your loss.

Reconnecting with earlier losses …

Grief from the loss of a pet may re-open old wounds from previous losses, both human and animal losses. You might find yourself grieving for the pet you just lost but also one you lost as a child. Or you might find yourself uncovering another layer of grief from the loss of a significant person in your life. In this, the death of your pet becomes an avenue through which you can heal more than one loss.

A lack of understanding and support …

When we suffer the death of another human, friends, coworkers and family offer their unconditional support. However, when we lose a pet, we might be told to “get over it” because it was “just an animal.” This response minimizes a very real (and sometimes very deep) grief, and can leave us isolated and ashamed of our pain.

The question of euthanasia …

Euthanasia can be merciful, sparing a dying animal pain and suffering. But pet owners who make the decision might question themselves soon after. Did I give up too soon? Did I wait too long? It is an especially difficult decision when pet owners cannot afford the costs for extraordinary treatments.
